In his debut effort, director/writer Steven Baigleman put together an interesting premise and collected a talented cast to execute it. Unfortunately, he never sets the tone, so we are caught between a wildly black comedy and an emotionally brutal drama. A firmer footing in either genre would have better defined our reactions to it. Keanu Reeves plays Jjaks, a man so badly trod upon by fate that his very name is the result of a typo. He arrives back at his mother’s house in a lower working-class Minnesota neighborhood to witness the marriage of his older brother (Vincent D’Onofrio) to an obviously reluctant bride (Cameron Diaz). By the time Jjaks is on his way, he’s stolen a car, a dog, and his brother’s wife. You have to give Baigleman credit for serving up intriguing characters. Unfortunately, he spins the story in circles instead of moving it along. Reeves and Diaz attempt to leave Minnesota, but never quite make it. Reeves repeatedly returns to a boyhood home he hates, always stumbling into his brother’s angry clutches. What does work are the performances. Diaz is both sad and strong as the tough cookie who happens to be the smartest character in the movie. D’Onofrio’s stupid nastiness is offset by his crushing love for her and an uncontrollable jealousy of Jjaks. Most surprising is Reeves, who makes us feel for his angry, unhappy loser by revealing flashes of decency under a toughened exterior. –Rochelle O’Gorman

What to Expect started with information–or, actually, lack of information. In fact, when I found out I was expecting for the first time–I didn’t have the slightest idea of what to expect. And back then, it wasn’t as easy to find out what to expect as you’d think. The producers of the American Pie movies pushed their luck with a third slice of their lucrative raunchy comedy franchise, and American Wedding cooked up surprisingly well. It’s the sourest serving of Pie, with half of the original cast missing, and there’s something undeniably desperate about comedic highlights (involving dog poop, a lusty old lady, two strippers to offset the absence of Shannon Elizabeth, and the ill-advised use of a trimming razor) that arise more from obligation than inspiration, on the assumption that another penile mishap is guaranteed to please. And yet, that’s just what this movie does for devoted Pie-munchers: It gives ‘em what they want, especially when the notorious Stifler (Seann William Scott) nearly ruins the frantic nuptials of Jim (Jason Biggs) and his band-camping sweetheart Michelle (Alyson Hannigan). Eugene Levy and Eddie Kaye Thomas also return for some reliable comic relief, but the one who’s laughing most is three-time Pie writer Adam Herz–laughing loudly and often, all the way to the bank. –Jeff Shannon

Kin Ping Meh

Kin Ping Meh is a guitar and organ laden (with mellotron) hard rock/psych band whose name is taken from a 16th century Chinese poem (it means “Plum Blossom Branch in a Golden Vase”). Though pretty much hard rock most of they time, they show many strong Beatles influences, a la John Lennon, in particular. The self titled first album, originally released late in 1971 as a quintet. The Revisited/Brain CD release of Kin Ping Meh contains both sides of both singles released before their first album.
Pop magazine described the album as …eight melodious and catchy pieces. Perfectly produced and smoothly coordinated from a technical point of view, the album by Kin Ping Meh will easily become a commercial success.
